Drone shots show the bleakness and desperation at the border with Ukraine.

Aid workers camped out in tents in temperatures as low as about -5 degrees, at makeshift encampments at Medyka, southern Poland.

The village has been the first point of safety for refugees fleeing the conflict.

At 6 am aid workers were starting the day, and police officers in patrol cars monitored the situation.

Refugees could be seen making the journey today (March 18) with children wrapped in gold foil blankets and elderly women being offered porridge by aid workers.

Field kitchens have been set up by volunteers and several stalls which looked like jumble sales provided warm clothes for kids.

Trains are still travelling to Ukraine free of charge so people can return to fight in the war or rescue family members, and a railway line runs alongside Medyka.

Ukraine can be seen in some of the drone shots.

Police checkpoints separate Medyka from Ukraine.
