What is a Heroic SACRIFICE?

Heroic Sacrifice can be considered a sacrifice done by who embraced their last moments with acts of honor or morality. However, it wasn't always the case. Not ALL examples of Heroic Sacrifice end in death – Some go through torture, injury and torment yet still survive. Does that make it any less noble or heroic? Can staying alive be, in fact, a kind of heroism of its own?

Definition of hero:
1a: a mythological or legendary figure often of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability
b: an illustrious warrior
c: a person admired for achievements and noble qualities
d: one who shows great courage
