Biber U-Boat - Walkaround - Uncle Beach Vlissingen.

The Biber was a German midget submarine during WWII
It would be armed with two externally mounted
53-centimetre torpedoes or mines,
they were intended to attack coastal shipping and
were the smallest submarines in the Kriegsmarine.

Construction of the first prototype began in February 1944
and was completed in less than 6 weeks.
and was heavily influenced by the British Welman submarine.

The Biber was hastily developed to help meet the
threat of an Allied invasion of Europe.
This resulted in basic technical flaws that,
combined with the inadequate training of their operators,
meant they never posed a real threat to Allied shipping,
despite 324 submarines being delivered.
One of the class's few successes was the sinking
of the cargo ship Alan A. Dale.

The small submarine was found on
the beach at Breskens in 1950, after it washed ashore.
the remains of a German soldier was found inside.

It was probably destroyed during Operation Calendar
and British minesweepers report three periscopes near Breskens.
They started shooting and ramming the little subs.
One Biber surfaced, the driver on board surrendered,
one sank and the third disappeared.

It is suspected that the sunken Biber
washed ashore six years later.
The Biber was send to Fort Rammekens and was then send to
Zeeuws Maritiem MuZEEUm and restored and
can now be seen on the Oranjedijk in Vlissingen.

UNCLE BEACH.

On September 21, 1944, the Battle of the Scheldt begins,
consisting of several Allied operations,
with the main objective of securing the passage to Antwerp.

At the beginning of October,
the dykes on Walcheren are bombed to pieces at various points,
as a result of which Walcheren is largely under water.

On November 1, the final of the Battle of the Scheldt,
operation Infatuate, starts.

Allied troops make the crossing from Breskens and
land at Vlissingen on Uncle Beach, with the intention
of retaking Walcheren.
The Allies moved into the city along three routes
along the boulevard,
towards Souburg and right through the city center.
