What does Putin expect to get out of the Ukraine Crisis?

In a similar big boy crisis,
Premier Kruschev wanted the American Jupiter missiles removed from Turkey
and Italy, and if possible ensure that Cuba was not invaded.
How? put some missiles on Americas doorstep and create a crisis.
In public the Americans can bark and look fierce, the Russians can give in,
and behind the scenes, each side gets something it wants.

So what can Russia get out of the Ukraine crisis?
A war with Europe to subsume the European countries is currently impossible.

Having the Chinese show up as great benefactors and create a Eurasian customs union,
that could include India in a gigantic anti dollar zone enables Russia to
be a key player in a new world realty.

What if Putin's calculation involves a new geopolitical formation on a grand scale.
This doesn't look very good for Taiwan and for the USA.
In this case the Ukraine, and the end result of that would be peripheral.
Putin can push his case of the donbass and allow graceful and magnanimous negotiations.

To determine your geopolitical power, ask how much of the time are you setting the agenda,
and how often are you merely reacting to the actions of others?
