This technology has been known since the 60's. I experimental prototype has been built. Why were Uranium heavy-water reactors chosen? The same systems can also produce weapons-grade material for producing a nuclear weapon.

LFTR advantages:
1. no chance of a meltdown
2. thorium is extemely common
3. thorium is already mined (as unwanted material) in quantities to supply the worlds power
4. cannot make weapon components.
