How I built a wall, actually two walls | Framing, Insulation, Drywall and Trim | 2021/03
As many of you may be aware I am also a handyman/contractor. I was recently hired to build a wall in a hair salon/barbershop. Its primary purpose was soundproofing the existing log wall from the suite next door. There is a hair salon next to a barber shop, and as you can imagine the noise level of conversations going back and forth between the wall can be annoying at best.
I started out my laying out a 2x4 stud wall with a top and bottom plate, and the studs on 16" centers. Once that was screwed together with 2 1/2" Grip-Rite construction screws, I lifted it into place and secured it to the adjacent framing and to the log wall.
Then I filled all of the cavities with Owens-Corning Mineral Wool insulation for sound proofing. Standards pink fiberglass insulation would have been cheaper, but would have not given me the acoustic protection I was looking for.
After that, it was on to drywall. six sheets total, installed on the vertical and secured with 1 1/4" drywall screws. Once that was complete, 40 minute joint compound to fill all the screw holes and tape all the joints. I learned a great trick for avoiding sanding, and smoothing all the mud joints. I learned it from Silver Cymbal (https://youtu.be/N_YTNoLKnqs), and by wiping the partially cured compound you can smooth and feather it, without having to sand at all.
Then it was on to texture. I have a Wagner Texture Gun, but I find the aerosol texture from Homax does a great job, and does not have any cleanup. but its expensive. About $24 a can that realistically covers about one sheet of drywall with three coats. While they say you can reuse the cans after a pause or another day if you clean the nozzle, I haven;t had much luck, so I always plan on using the whole can, and get the size or sizes that's right for the project I am working on. Three average coats, and I was done.
I trimmed everything out with MDF trim boards to match existing, and caulked everything with DAP Alex Fast Dry. Done. No paint! That's for the customer.
