Topic – The Behavioral Model – Traits vs Behaviors – Behavior Therapy Series

There are two broad categories of behaviors: Overt and Covert. Overt behaviors are actions that other people can directly see or hear; Covert behaviors are private behaviors, things we do that others cannot directly observe. Overt behaviors, cognitions, emotions, and psychological responses constitute the four modes of behavior that are assessed and treated in behavior therapy.

Traits are personality characteristics that we attribute to others and ourselves, such as friendly, smart, interesting and honest. Traits are inferred from behaviors. Descriptions that concern what people do refer to behaviors; descriptions that concern what people are or characteristics that they possess refer to traits.

Behavior therapists deal with clients’ behaviors, not their traits.
