In this video you will learn about the legends and symbolics of the Baba Marta Tradition, celebrated in Bulgaria.

Baba Marta is an ancient Bulgarian tradition that dates to Pegan times. (Baba means Grandma and Marta means March). So, Baba Marta is a mythical grumpy old lady who comes to mark the end of the Winter and the beginning of the Spring Season. She is known for her swift changes in the mood just like the unpredictable weather in the month of March. When she is in a good mood the sun is shining and when she is angry it can get very cold and even snow.

On the March 1st, all Bulgarians exchange martenitsa, a small piece of adornment, made of twisted woollen or cotton thread. Martenitsa is a symbol of strong health, londjevity, and abundance. The main colours used are white and red (although there are some other variations depending on the region).

White is a symbol of purity, joy, and innocence, while the red colour symbolises health, vitality, and fertility. A Red yarn is also tied to protect against evil and to bring health. The combination of red and white symbolizes rebirth and starting a new cycle.

There is more than one legend associated with the Martenitsa tradition but all of them date to the time of the first Bulgarian King - Khan Asparuh and the establishment of the first Bulgarian Empire in 681. According to one of the stories when Khan Asparuh arrived to the area of Danube river he decided that this is the land where he would like to settle but when he decided to light a ceremony fire he realized that he does not have one of the herbs. He sent a message to his sister Huba and asked her to send to him the herb. She tied a thread of white yarn around the one of the legs of a falcon and attached the herb to the thread... but the wing of the bird got wounded by an arrow and when it arrived half of the thread was red... this happened on the 1st of March and this is how the tradition was born. This is the oldest tradition of Bulgaria and even Europe.
