A new documentary, "The Bit Player: Claude Shannon, a Prophet of Information," screened at Oct. 10 at 6:30 p.m. in Reamer Auditorium. The event is sponsored by the Departments of Computer Science, English, Math, and Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering, along with the Film Studies Program.

The film's director, Mark Levinson, will be on hand for a Q&A after the showing.

The Bit Player was created to celebrate the 2016 centenary of the birth of Shannon, the "father of information theory." It was produced and directed by Levinson in cooperation with the IEEE Information Theory Society and the IEEE Foundation.

An American mathematician, electrical engineer and cryptographer, Shannon was noted for having founded information theory with his landmark 1948 paper, "A Mathematical Theory of Communication."
