How to Become a Qualified DOT Urine Specimen Collector

The 49 CFR Part 40, the main set of regulations under the United States Department of Transportation governing drug and alcohol testing programs, requires that any individual who is collecting a specimen for drug testing be specifically trained and qualified. The 49 CFR Part 40.33 describes the minimum training requirements to become a qualified collector, including receiving Basic Information, Qualification Training, and Initial Proficiency Demonstrations from a qualified trainer.

You will need to be trained in all three in order to begin collecting specimens under these federal protocols. Some training providers will provide only the first two components and then require that you find, and pay, a qualified trainer to complete the last component, the initial proficiency demonstrations. However, some training providers like WorkTraining.com, offer a complete course with all three components and all materials necessary to complete the training in one package for a single price. Once you complete the training, you will become qualified for five years before needing refresher training
