Retired Army General and Liberal Senator Jim Molan says the "beauty" of Ukrainians fighting so successfully is other countries are prepared to give them lethal aid.

This comes after Prime Minister Scott Morrison, alongside Defence Minister Peter Dutton, announced $70 million in lethal aid and a further $35 million in humanitarian support for Ukraine.

"Our contribution is important, I think it's important because it's a manifestation of how our government is thinking about this conflict," Mr Molan told Sky News host Rita Panahi.

He said prior to this, Australia only provided humanitarian aid as it had the view Ukraine would be "walked over".
