During pre-Hispanic times, the quetzal was associated with the Mexica god Quetzalcoatl and his Mayan parallel Kukulkan, deities that manifested the archetype of the feathered serpent.

According to the Popol Vuh, sacred book of the Mayan culture, when the creator god Kukulkan and Tepeu, god of the sky, decided to give life to the birds, they blew on the guayacan tree, the greenish blue leaves were dispersed in the wind and transformed into this bird.

Currently the quetzal inhabits from the southern region of Mexico, to the northern part of Venezuela, due to illegal hunting, the population of this species has been reduced, which has caused it to enter the category of endangered species.
