“Ultimately more than 200 teachers, parents and students would claim that exposure at Sky Valley made them severely sick with illnesses that have been linked to PCB exposure.”

Sky Valley Education Center in Monroe Washington made headlines January 23rd 2022. The news is not good. In the pro publica news article it starts with headaches, inflamed rashes, and oral blisters...Also cognitive problems, skin cysts, and girls as young as 6 hitting puberty.

Why was all of this happening? The campus has been noted as early as 2014 to have materials filled with PCB material. PCB are Polychlorinated Biphenyls.

One teacher is reported to have developed uterus cancer as a result of the exposure. Her classroom was one of the ones with highest levels of the toxic chemicals. Inspections found the PCBs and high levels of carbon dioxide poor air ventilation.

The kicker is the school admins KNEW ABOUT THIS!

Health inspectors started noting the problem in 2014. The school officials told everyone, teachers, parents, the public that cleanup efforts were successful. Obviously this was not the case and Sky Valley remains open to this day.

PCBs were banned by the EPA in 1979 but still remain in some of the buildings built before then.

Currently the law in Washington requires health districts to inspect schools for hazardous materials and propose actions that should be taken. BUT they do not need to enforce these actions. On top of that the school is not required to notify parents!

Gerry Pollet is a state representative and he noticed that the laws in Washington are exceptionally weak when it comes to environmental health in schools. He learned that through lead testing in the drinking water. He has since had a bill passed requiring testing for lead.

Pollet is quoted saying :”If you have a contaminated gas station, we clean it up for the health of the community. But if you have the same contamination inside the school building, we act like it’s exempt from our standards of toxic exposure and cleanup. And that is a really sad and serious failing of state policy.”

This school district has not responded to questions about the conditions at sky valley.

in 2016 admin were updating families reassuring them that the campus was safe.

MEANWHILE the school, school district, and health district could not agree on how to remedy this problem.

An official from the state health department suggested, “a thorough wipe down of hard surfaces with warm soapy water and an through vacuum.”

A state toxicologist forwarded this to an EPA official saying “have you been looped in on this? I’m not sure soapy water is the answer.”

So after this the EPA relational office stepped in. Saying quote “were anxious to understand the state of PCBs in the school.”

Another inspection followed finding PCBs in several light fixtures.

That night almost 100 parents went to the school board meeting.
