Grilled Georgia Peaches - The Hillbilly Kitchen
An interesting story my mom shared with me about Grilled Peaches...
Back in the day, when I was growing up in the north Georgia mountains, granny would send us kids out to her modest, but well kempt orchard down in the bottom to pick a few peaches for a much anticipated dessert...Grilled Peaches.
Granny never owned a BBQ grill, she grilled her peaches over a little fire pit that Paw dug next to the spigot. I suppose he put it there for safety sake, in case the fire got out of hand the water to put it out was right there handy.
The ice cream she put on top of the peaches was homemade and she always let us kids help make it. It was tiring work but she rewarded us with a spoonful when it was done.
The honey drizzle came directly from her beehives. Granny never let us kids around the bees and she kept the hives pretty far away from where we always played.
Grilled Peaches were Granny's own invention and she made them often. Later on, as a teenager, I went to work in a diner in Georgia and I introduced the owner, Carl, to Grilled Peaches. He loved them and promptly added them to his menu.
About 20 years later, Bret and I were enjoying a night on the town at a swanky 5 star restaurant in New York city and while I was thumbing through the menu I saw something that shocked me. Granny's Grilled Georgia Peaches were on the menu! The picture looked exactly like the way granny made them, but the chef came up with a fancy name for them. He called them Grilled Peach a la mode. Imagine that, granny's peaches served up at a swanky restaurant!
Now you can make this delicious dessert on your grill or fire pit just like my great grandma did. It's easy and 5 star.
