2000 Year Old Skeleton Found
-A skeleton from the 1st century BC, has been discovered as part of a shipwreck just off the coast of the Greek Island Antikythera
-The shipwreck findings were considered to be a rare, spectacular find even before knowing there were human remains within it.
-It’s believed that vessel collided with rocks on its journey from Anatolia to Rome
-The ship was carrying luxury goods aboard for wealthy buyers in Rome.
-This ship was one of the largest of its time at around 40 metres long with multiple decks and carrying 15-20 people on board.
-Researchers believe the skeleton was of a young man who was trapped on the bottom deck of the ship which sank and was buried very quickly which has allowed the skeleton to be preserved exceptionally well.
-This is proving to be of the oldest and most famous shipwrecks
-Skeletal remains are usually eaten by fish or swept away by ocean currents, so this really is a rare find.
-The skeleton was found buried under half a meter of pottery sherds.
-The found pieces include part of a jaw with 3 teeth, 2 arm bones, several ribs, 2 femurs all from the same person.
-They were found surrounded by corroded iron objects which have stained the bones amber red
-The skeleton has been named pamphilos after a name that was found etched into nearby cup
-Researchers are trying to do a DNA analysis on a 2000 year old skeleton. This has never been done before, currently they are waiting for permission to be granted by the Greek
authorities, then it'll take a week to find out if the bone samples contain DNA.
After that it will take a few months to sequence it and analyse the findings.
Other findings include:
-2 bronze spears from statues
-wine jars
-glassware
-gold jewelery
-table jugs
-Large anchor
-War Dolphin (a defensive weapon used to smash hostile ships)
-And finally an ancient mechanism was found which is shockingly complex as it models the motions of the sun, moon and planets
