10. The name velociraptor comes from the latin words velox and raptor meaning swift robber.
9.This cold blooded reptile as we thought was more then likely a warm blooded mammal. Cold blooded reptiles aren’t known for active pursuit of their prey but are more likely to calmly wait for prey to get too close, such as a crocodile. This idea plus the evidence that shows they are most likely a feathered land bird heavily suggests they were warm blooded.
8. They could grow up to 6.6 feet or 2 meters in length, 3 feet or 1 meter tall and weighed up to 33 lbs or 15 kg. That’s about half the weight of a larger sized dog.
7. The velociraptor was not only a predator but also a scavenger. They ate small dinosaurs, mammals, reptiles and amphibians. One of their choice foods was protoceratops, which was a small pig sized dinosaur. One fossil specimen shows the two locked in a death battle when they were buried alive by a sandstorm.
6. The raptor lived in central Asia or more specifically Mongolia around 70 million years ago. In Jurassic Park they had dinosaur living on a fictional island just off the coast of costa rica.
5. The velociraptor was made famous by the Jurassic Park movies but it’s actually a bit of a lie. You see the creature seen in the movies they called the velociraptor was actually created around the skeleton of the Deinonychus, which was a much bigger more ferocious dinosaur. The reasoning is pretty simple, velociraptor sounds much more appealing as a terrifying dinosaur and having a knee height dino running around isn’t as scary as one that is between waist and shoulder height in size
4. The velociraptor has hind feet armed with sharp claws measuring 3 inches long. The 2nd toe features a sickle-shaped claw which delivers the killing blow to it’s prey as well has holding its prey in place.
3. Another popularized idea is that the raptor hunted in packs but there is no evidence to support this idea. All the velociraptor specimens found have been solitary individuals and not groups.
2. Despite being portrayed as speedy killing machines, the velociraptor wasn’t as fast as hollywood would lead us to believe. Their short legs would have limited their speed to a point where a moderately athletic human could outrun them. It is believed they still could run quite fast for short bursts potentially being able to catch a human during that short window but wouldn’t have a chance of catching elite level runners like Usain Bolt.
1. This scaly lizard was actually covered in feathers. Now this might ruin the image of this dinosaur for you but there is evidence that shows the velociraptor was actually a bird covered in feathers. Bone fossils show bumps on their bones known as quill knobs which indicates where feathers attached to the bone. Modern day birds today have the same feature. It might be laughable to think of the velociraptor as a giant chicken but for anyone who's been chased by a swan, there’s some real fear there.
