On this episode, we discuss the origins of the Golden Tiger.

Human involvement with the tiger has led to a one of a kind color, on this episode we bring you the golden tiger.

A color variation caused by a recessive gene is responsible for this unique light colored tiger. The golden tiger also known as strawberry tiger and golden tabby tiger is a result of captive breeding and inbreeding. This light colored tiger with orange vs. black stripes isn’t possible to occur naturally in nature. Like the white tiger, it is a color form and not a separate species.

All the current names of this tiger are suggestions with no real official name being designated. A side effect of this inbreeding is that golden tigers are larger than normal tigers and due to the effect of the gene on the hair shaft, they have softer fur.

Most zoos have no knowledge of how to breed a golden tiger, it is a by-product of breeding orange and white tigers together. The first tiger born in captivity was in 1983 in Florida, since then many tigers have been born in captivity destined to live their lives out in a small box. Siberian tigers can travel up to 37 miles or 60 kms in a single day in the wild. Across the world today there are over 20 locations that have golden tigers.

Despite what was said earlier of golden tigers only existing in captivity, India claims to have wild golden tigers dating back as early as the 1900s. This unusual color would allow for better camouflage but this claim remains unproven. It’s possible if a small group of tigers inbred a golden tiger would be born. Within a single litter of tigers, it’s possible for normal, white and golden tigers to be born.

Currently, all golden tabby tigers can be traced back to Bhim, a white tiger son of a part white Amur tiger named Tony. Tony, the tiger, is considered to be a common ancestor of all white tigers in north America. Bhim carries the wide band gene which gets transmitted to some of his offspring. While bred with his sister Sumita, stripeless white tigers were born.

Despite it being a result of excessive inbreeding the golden tiger is beautiful creature. Do you think humans should be tinkering with these colors genes that don’t normally happen naturally?
