A new revolution of biodegradable tableware is starting to hit the market. On this episode we take a look at the invention of leaf plates.

After 3 years of research and development Leaf Republic has created biodegradable leaf plates made with no plastic, chemicals, glue or colors.

Started as a kickstarter campaign, they received full funding with over 75000 dollars coming from 684 backers. They offered multiple different funding tiers with the top one at $8300 allowing you to design your own bowl or plate and receive 22,500 of them in 45 boxes.

The leaves for these leaf plates come from wild grown Asian and South American forests sourced from local villages. The leaves are stitched together then pressed with this unique machine to create the shape of the plate. This biodegradable tableware takes only 1 month to break down and be returned to nature. With that said it has a shelf life of 1 ½ years.

There are multiple different sizes of plates and bowls with the round plates measuring 7 or 8 inches or 1.7 or 2 decimeters in diameter and bowls measuring 9 by 4 inches or 2.2 by 1 decimeter.

In this image here you can see there are also long plates and small sauce dishes.

It is possible to reuse this tableware but due to their nature structure they aren’t the easiest to clean. They were designed as a one time use plate for barbecues and picnics, if used only with dry foods like nuts and snacks they will last a while.

If you want to get your hands on some of these leaf plates, currently it seems they are mostly only available from their German amazon store.

There is also another company called Wild Leaf Tableware that makes square palm leaf plates from Areca palm leaves. These plates don’t have any chemicals used in there processing and break down in 2 months after disposed. They offer 5 different sizes of plates that have more of a rustic wood like look to them.
