Harvest Drinking Water from the Air!? - The Warka Tower

A new innovation in water capture is now currently being used in the countries that need it most. On this episode, we bring you the invention of the Warka Tower.

The warka water tower was invented as an alternative source of a water for rural populations unable to obtain enough drinking water. The name warka comes from the warka tree a large wild fig tree in Ethiopia which provides valuable food and a gathering place for the community.

The idea for the tower was inspired by water capture surfaces on plants and animals. Most notably the nambi beetle’s shell, lotus flower leaves, spider web thread and the fog collection system of cactus.

So how does the tower work? It requires only gravity, condensation and evaporation to function, no power is needed. It collects rain, harvests fog and dew which provides potable water for villages desperate in need. Currently being used in Ethiopia, Haiti, and Togo this invention has been life changing to rural villagers.

There have been 12 iterations of the warka tower thus far with the current one being version 3.7. The project started in 2012 that has gained a lot of momentum over the years with large scale production targeted for 2019. The tower measures 31 feet or 9.5 meters tall covering 12 sq feet or 3.7 sq meters in size. The shape of the warka tower also inspired by nature which comes from the termite hive. The tower itself only weighs 176 lbs or 80 kg and costs around $1000 to produce. It can be built in 10 day by 10 people, by hand with no powered machinery required. With 10 people and 2 hours time the tower can be setup and start the water collecting process. It can hold 800 gallons or 3000 liters of water which is collected at a rate of 13 to 26 gallons or 50 to 100 liters a day.
