What Is Internet Alarm Monitoring?

In this video, Joe talks about internet alarm monitoring and how it works. The options for internet alarm monitoring are wireless WIFI connections or hardwired ethernet connections. Most newer alarm systems have the ability to support some form of internet connectivity for alarm monitoring services.

Internet alarm monitoring provides extremely fast speeds for the panel. This is useful for alerting the end user or a central monitoring station as quickly as possible during an alarm event. Internet monitoring also offers rapid operation of Z-Wave home automation devices when they are being controlled remotely.

Honeywell security systems can access the Total Connect interactive service platform using an internet connection. This service allows users to operate their systems remotely over the AlarmNet360 network. This is one of the greatest benefits of internet alarm monitoring for Honeywell Systems. But only the Lyric Controller will support internet alarm monitoring right out of the box. The LYNX Touch and many VISTA Systems can also receive internet monitoring, but an add-on of some type is usually needed.

By logging into their a Total Connect account, a user can arm and disarm their system, check the current status of their sensors, control Z-Wave home automation devices and more. However, the Alarm.com service, which is used with alarm systems from other manufacturers, usually requires a cellular connection to access.

While internet monitoring offers many benefits, we generally recommend cellular connectivity or a dual-path communication setup that features both cellular and IP service. Unlike internet monitoring, cellular service is almost never down or unavailable, and it is not affected by power outages. Cellular monitoring provides speeds that are comparable to that of internet monitoring, and both Total Connect and Alarm.com can be properly accessed over cellular.

Most alarm systems that can support internet monitoring can also support cellular, but an add-on may be needed to connect with a cellular network. Additionally, the user will need an alarm monitoring plan that includes cellular service.
