Avozilla - The World's Largest Avocado

Discovered in South Africa and grown in Australia is an avocado you’ll have to see to believe. On this episode, we bring you the avozilla.

Being a cross between an Indian and Guatemalan avocado the avozilla as it is commonly called is 4 - 5 times the size of a normal avocado. Weighing in at 4 lbs or 1.8 kgs these massive avocados taste similar to a normal sized avocado but are slightly creamier, allowing them to be spread on toast easier. It has been found one can make 12 to 23 slices of avocado toast from a single avozilla based on how thick it’s spread.

Originating in South Africa, the Groves family brought this giant avocado to Queensland, Australia to be commercially produced. Known for bringing in and growing exotic tropical fruit since 1957, the Groves family took on the task of growing the avozilla.

This variety of avocado is owned by a South African company requiring one to gain permission and must pay royalties when growing them. Groves is no longer the only family growing the avozilla, a friend of theirs is planting 2000 of these trees this year so they won’t be going away anytime soon. This new plantation will eventually create some competition for the Groves family but their trees are 4 years old at an age where they produces fruit so it’ll be a few years before that happens. The first harvest of the avozilla sold locally to residents of Sydney, Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane for $9 to $12 each. Not as profitable as a normal avocado, these trees don’t produce very many avocados per season vs a common avocado tree.
