On the previous episode built a tomato trellis, planted my tomatoes and put corn seeds in the ground, on this episode I plant a blueberry bush.

So as stated I first checked the tag to confirm the soil requirements. When digging the hole you want to make sure to dig it twice the size of the plant base or root ball which will give it some space to grow into without much effort. This is especially true if you have dense clay soil as I have.

With the hole dug I added some azomite or rock dust which will add in a full spectrum of minerals into the soil. Next is worm castings and compost which will help the plant thrive. Try to loosen up the soil a bit without damaging the roots before putting the plant in the ground. I filled in the top with some of the crumbly clay soil as it’s less important what’s on top vs what’s underground. It’s important to give the plant a thorough watering after planting it especially in the 28 degree celsius heat. A deep watering will soak down past the bottom of the roots enticing the roots to grow deeper giving the blueberry or any bush better stability. I planted this bush in the afternoon but it’s better to do so in the evening to help it adjust better, it’ll also have more time to drink up the water when the sun isn’t so hot. In my case I didn't’ have time to do it later and it needed to get in the ground so that’s how things work out sometimes.

I immediately setup support stakes for the blueberry as I know no roots will be damaged, to do this I’ve developed a unique way that was worked well for me. I pound an extremely long bolt, probably 2 foot long, into the ground with a sledge hammer. This goes into the ground with ease but getting it out is a little trickier. I have to rotate it then wiggle and pull to get it out but after doing so I have a perfect hole to put a willow branch in the ground to use a a stake for my blueberry. I make sure to step on the ground around it after the willow branch is in and the ground tightens up around it. After tying the base of the blueberry to the top of the branch with some jute the blueberry is all set to grow nice and straight and is fully supported until it’s roots get long enough.
