In this video, Jorge explains the purpose of the backup battery on the Interlogix Simon XTi and Simon XTi-5 Alarm Systems. These panels depend on a backup battery to remain powered on when the electricity goes out or the AC transformer is unplugged. This way, the building will always stay monitored.

Nearly every alarm system uses two sources of power. The primary power source is the plug-in AC or DC transformer. But if the power goes out or if the transformer is unplugged, then the system will need to use a different method to remain running. This usually comes in the form of a backup battery. Maintaining a properly functioning backup battery is very important for ensuring that the alarm system remains running at all times. This is crucial, as it's possible that an emergency could occur while the power is out. With a backup battery, the system will still be able to send outbound communication signals and communicate with the central monitoring station.

The Interlogix Simon XTi and Simon XTi-5 Panels use the same type of backup battery. This accessory is called the Interlogix 600-XTI-BAT. The battery provides 6-volts of power at 2100 mAh. While the system is running on AC power, the backup battery will also draw a small amount of power. The battery will be storing this power for later. When the electricity goes out, the system will use this reserved power to resume operation. The 600-XTI-BAT is designed to keep an Interlogix Simon XTi or Simon XTi-5 System running for up to 24 hours. If the system loses both AC power and battery power, then it will shut down entirely. Keep in mind that the 600-XTI-BAT will need to be replaced every few years to remain operational. This is because the battery will be able to store less and less of a charge over time, until it is eventually no longer useful.
