The current third generation of the Ghibli (Tipo M157) was unveiled at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show. The Ghibli is offered with three different 3.0-litre V6 engines: a twin-turbocharged 330 PS (243 kW; 325 hp) or 410 PS (302 kW; 404 hp) petrol and a 275 PS (202 kW; 271 hp) turbodiesel, making the Ghibli the first Maserati production car to be powered by a diesel engine. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard on all models; all wheel drive is available with the most powerful V6, although not in right hand drive markets.

It's pronounced "gib-lee" and it's named for an African desert wind—the perfect name for a hot Italian sedan. With its deliciously curved lines, the 2020 Maserati Ghibli's looks are backed up by what's under the hood: a twin-turbocharged V-6 engine offered in either 345- or 424-hp guise. Not only does the Ghibli's engine provide quick acceleration, it also sounds fantastic, especially when Sport mode is engaged and the exhaust system opens itself up for a throatier growl. Despite its Italian-ness and a host of fancy optional extras, as a mid-size luxury car, the Ghibli doesn't quite measure up. It borrows too many cheap interior bits from the Fiat-Chrysler parts bin to pull off its upscale price tag. Rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz E-class and Audi A6 offer more modern tech and luxury features as standard.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The base setup for the Ghibli is a 345-hp twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 with rear-wheel drive; the S performance version has 424 horsepower, rear-wheel drive, and offers all-wheel drive (Q4 in Maserati parlance) as an option. Both engines have an eight-speed automatic transmission. We tested an S model back in 2014 and were charmed by the exotic sounds that it made. At our test track, it managed a 4.7-second zero-to-60-mph time—quick for 2014, but today it can be outrun by a non-AMG version of the Mercedes-Benz E-class. Since then, Maserati has upped the power on S models from 404 to 424 ponies. When we tested this engine in the Maserati Levante SUV, it managed a time of 5.1 seconds, so the lighter Ghibli should be noticeably quicker. The Ghibli's on-road demeanor is frisky but the trade-off is a jarring ride over rough surfaces.

Although it is based on a platform shared with the Chrysler 300, the Ghibli has its own sporty character. The Ferrari-developed V6 turbo engine is mated to a quick-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission. Handling is agile, the brakes are strong, and the engine emits a thrilling bark. But the stiff ride can grow fatiguing, the rear seat is cramped, and the Ghibli is louder than most sporty luxury sedans. Climbing in or out of this low-slung sports sedan can be a challenge. The interior is outfitted with high-quality leather and suede, and most controls are easy to use, except for the unintuitive gear selector. Chrysler's Uconnect touch screen is a plus, but it's hard not to notice some cheap-looking switches that are sourced from the Chrysler parts bins. The top-line V6 recently gained 20 hp.

The Ghibli is Maserati's more-attainable luxury sedan. It uses a Ferrari-developed 345-hp, turbo V6 mated to an eight-speed automatic, driving the rear wheels. The SQ 4 all-wheel-drive version has a 404-hp turbo V6. The platform is based on the Chrysler 300, but the Ghibli's interior, driving dynamics, and exhaust note are all Italian. Handling is sporty and agile, and the engine emits a distinctive bark. The interior is full of high quality leather and suede, and most controls are easy to use, including Chrysler's UConnect touch screen. The ride is stiff and the rear seat is cramped.
