Siren Timeout on the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus
In this video, Jorge discusses siren timeout on the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus System. Siren timeout is a feature that has a panel siren stop sounding automatically if an alarm is not cleared after a set period of time. The purpose of the feature is to prevent the panel siren from sounding indefinitely.
When an alarm occurs on a system, one of the main things that happen is that any configured sirens will begin sounding. This includes the system's internal sounder, as well as any additional sirens that have been set up with the system. The internal sounder for the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus is rated at 85 dB. This is loud enough for most residential applications. If you want a louder siren, then you will need to get an external siren.
If you set off a siren accidentally, then getting it to stop sounding is probably your top priority. A loud siren is very distracting, and you will have a tough time going about your regular activity if there is a siren blaring in the background. Alternatively, if an intruder breaks into your home, or if a fire occurs, then you will probably want the siren to keep sounding. In those scenarios, there is an emergency, and you will want any emergency personnel to locate the source of the problem as soon as possible.
By clearing an alarm, you are telling the system that the problem has been addressed. You might still get a call from the central station to make sure that everything is alright, but in the immediate term, the siren will stop sounding. But the alarm is legitimate, then only a valid system user will be able to get the siren to stop sounding. This is because you must provide a valid system code to get a siren to stop on the IQ Panel 2 Plus. An intruder won't know a valid code. And if your house is on fire, then escaping should be your top priority, not clearing your fire alarm.
But just because you do not clear the burglary alarm or the fire alarm doesn't mean that the siren will continue to sound indefinitely. The system has a set bell timeout feature that will have the siren stop automatically after a set period of time, even if a valid code is not entered. Many jurisdictions require that security systems have a set bell timeout that is less than an allowed maximum period. This is because cities usually do not want alarm sirens left blaring for an extended period of time. Make sure your system is compliant with these requirements.
