Jesus' Sermon on the Mount is considered one of the most powerful sermons in history. The Beatitudes are especially famous and so counter-cultural.

The Beatitudes open with this statement, "Blessed are the Poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

We will look to dive into each of these beatitudes to understand what they mean, but more importantly, so that we know how to live them.

What does Jesus mean by 'blessed are the poor in spirit'? And what does it mean, 'kingdom of heaven'?

Jesus was saying an important message for all of us, and he was saying it in the context of masses who were hungry for something real. Jesus delivered that as he spoke the truth in love and spoke love in truth. Both.

The message that he gives, one of humility, is a message that that the humble will seek out God. They know who they are and who are they not. This is in contrast to the proud who believe they have it all together.

Jesus' teachings were refreshing, earth-shaking and were of a different kind than what the people were getting. This is why the masses flocked to Jesus.

The followers of Jesus will always be imperfect people, frought with the frailties of man. But when our faith and our worship is centered on Jesus, we will never be ashamed.
