Oxford (English: "oxen's Ford"," bull's Ford", pronounced [ksksfəd]) is a city in the United Kingdom, the capital of the County of Oxfordshire. Oxford is known for the oldest higher education institution in English — speaking countries and one of the oldest in Europe-the University of Oxford. The University of Oxford is a unique and historic institution.

The exact date of its creation is unknown, however, in one form or another, education at Oxford existed as early as 1096. And from 1167, when Henry II announced that English students were forbidden to enter the University of Paris, education began to develop rapidly. All the leading ratings of educational institutions in the UK (the Complete University Guide, the Times and the Guardian) call this University the best in the country; in addition, it has given the world about 50 Nobel laureates.

Oxford stands on the banks of the Thames, at the confluence of the river Charwell. The 10-mile stretch of Thames that runs through the city is commonly referred to as the Isais. In 2015, the population was 159,574[1], of which about 30,000 were University students.

Oxford was first mentioned in writing in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles in 912. Then in its place was a monastery of the Holy Frideswide.
