Quietly, several years ago, the species name of Chlorella pyrenoidosa was changed to Chlorella sorokiniana, which no one can pronounce. Why did they do this? When I investigated the reason I was stunned and angry, more like infuriated. Sorokin is the name of one of the researchers who studied chlorella in the 1950’s and 60’s. So why not Tongkat_Ali_(Eurycoma_longifolia)name it after him? The species should describe the plant. Right? Well, not when it comes to chlorella apparently. You have Eurycoma longifolia, better known as Tongkat Ali, which produces testosterone in the body. Eurycoma is a small genus of three or four species of flowering plants in the family Simaroubaceae, native to tropical southeastern Asia. Longifolia refers to the long leaves that it has.

But when it comes to the most powerful food on earth, Chlorella, a green algae, UTEX decided to bend the rules and name after a scientist. Maybe they liked the guy or maybe he had a lot of dirt of some of them.
