The Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem (completed in 694 AD) contains the earliest inscription mentioning Muhammad. But who is this Muhammad whom Caliph Abd al-Malik mentioned on there? The context provided by the inscription itself strongly indicates, that it is not the prophet of Islam after all.
