Organic farming is an alternative agricultural system that arose in response to rapidly changing farming practices in the early twentieth century. Organic agriculture is still being developed today by numerous organic agricultural organizations. It relies on organic fertilizers such as compost manure, green manure, and bone meal, and emphasizes crop rotation and companion planting practices. Biological pest control, mixed cropping, and insect predator breeding are all encouraged. Organic standards, in general, are intended to enable the use of naturally occurring compounds while forbidding or severely restricting the use of manufactured substances.
