Peter Jackson's follow-up to his Lord of the Rings masterpieces was less well-received, but it has many moments of film-making magic, and is still a great film, although arguably too long. James Newton Howard was called in at the last minute to write the score after something didn't work out with composer Howard Shore, and he contributed a handful of gorgeous themes, with the film's New York third act being particularly beautiful, sad and at times, epic.
Starring Naomi Watts, Andy Serkis, Jack Black, Adrien Brody, Kyle Chandler, Colin Hanks, Jamie Bell and Thomas Kretschmann. Music by James Newton Howard.
