Franklin Camargo Reflects On Ayn Rand's Comments About Love

Ayn Rand has been criticized for her thoughts on love. Our culture says love should be self-sacrificial, unconditional, and forbearing... but Ayn Rand tells us that love must be self-interested. Virtuous, yes... but blindly self-sacrificing, no. A harsh interpretation and wayyy too many Hollywood rom-coms make the idea of "self-interested" love sound crazy but Ayn Rand put it best when she said that "To Say I Love You, One Must First Know how to say 'I'". Really, what Rand was advocating for, was self-care before "self-care" was cool. She advocated for knowing yourself and choosing to love others who reflect and love you for your shared values. So, while Hollywood continues to glorify big acts of self-sacrificing love, Rand encourages us to first know how to love ourselves and to be firm in who we are as individuals so that we can best choose a life partner when we are ready.
