Our unexpected things included:
It was more expensive than we expected., Costa Rica is still considered a third-world country, which means that the poor far outnumber the middle class so we expected things like accommodations and car rentals to be much cheaper. However, be prepared to pay North American prices for these things. There are budget options for accommodation like hostels and cheaper hotels but if you’re not looking to travel on a budget, it isn’t that cheap. Eating out at local sodas (local restaurants) is inexpensive, costing only $4-$7 a meal and the food is so delicious!

It takes a lot longer to get places than we expected. The distances are quite short as Costa Rica is a small country but roads are usually windy, slower and some are unpaved and single lane. It often took us twice the time we expected to get anywhere. We also got lost using the wrong App so when you’re there make sure you use WAZE.

Parking Security - something you will pay for when visiting popular beaches and national parks. A lot attendant will charge you to watch over your car while you are away. Always have some cash on hand for this and the cost is only a couple hundred colones.

If you are looking for decaf Coffee, you will have a hard time. Costa Rica proudly grows their own coffee beans and it is a major export. I think decaf is thought as inferior coffee so they don’t have much of it around.

Scorpions glow at night. This was such a fun find for us! They glow blue-green under a black light from a coating in their exoskeleton. Plus scorpions in Costa Rica are NOT deadly.

Night walks are a fun activity to do as you learn a lot about the animals in Costa Rica. The rainforest really comes alive at night too!

Airport Departure Tax is not usually covered on your airline ticket and you will have to pay it at a special counter at the airport before checking in for your flight. Beware of scammers trying to charge you and double-check your ticket just to make sure it isn’t already included. The cost was $29 US per person.

We hope these insights into our unexpected things will help you in your trip planning to this truly amazing country!
