LVT-4 - Landing Vehicle Tracked - Walkaround - Monument Kotem.
The LVT (officially designated as Landing Vehicle Tracked)
is an amphibious warfare vehicle and amphibious landing craft,
introduced by the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps. the LVT was designed by Developed by Donald Roebling
in 1935 as a civilian rescue vehicle called the Alligator.
Roebling was asked by the military to design a more seaworthy
model for military use which would be a cargo carrier for ship to shore operations, they evolved into assault troop and fire support vehicles.
Production would start on July 1941 and the first LVT-1 would be a easily produced design.
The production would lead to the LVT-2.3.4, Buffalo and other developments.
The United States Army, Canadian Army and British Army used several LVT models during World War II,.
The LVT would see action in the Pacific and Europe. It would mostly see action in the Pacific and in
Europe, LVTs were mainly used for landings and river crossing operations
as well as assaults in swampy zones. By the end of 1943,
200 LVT-1s had been delivered to the British Army for training in
preparation for future operations in Europe.
The U.S., British, and Canadian armies used the Buffalo
in the 1944 Battle of the Scheldt.
The would also see action in the Korean War and would be used by some countries after the war.
This LVT-4 is situated near the bridge in Kotem.
It sunk during an accident in a British exercise on 5 March 1945 in preparation of Operation Plunder were the Rhine would be crossed by the
U.S. XVIII Airborne Corps, the British 6th and the U.S. 17th Airborne Divisions.
In the accident two people were killed, driver Phil Harding and assistant driver Stanley Clark.Harding was found some time later,
but Clark was never found again.
In June 1977, the LVT was found on the Dutch side of the river It was secretly towed to Belgium and pretty much stolen from Dutch property.
It would sit on the river bank for sometime and was restored
and the monument was unveiled in September 1977.
