Born in Jamaica, Gary Mason grew up in Clapham and was based in Kent, England, when he won the British Heavyweight Championship in 1989, after winning his first professional fight five years earlier. He was known as a Gentle Giant, had an iron chin and fought until 1994, winning 37 of his 38 fights, 34 by knockout, losing only to Lennon Lewis - though suffering a second injury to his eye, a detached retina, in the 7th round. Afterwards, he had two more fights, which he won and then retired. He founded what is now known as the Gary Mason Rhythmical Empowerment Charitable Foundation, a ‘not-for-profit’ charity which teaches African djembe drum music to people of all ages, colours and creeds with an emphasis on encouraging the disabled and those with special needs. Mason died on January 6, 2011, in a cycling accident in South London.
