The #Covid pandemic has #transformed the #world.

It pushed organizations into a digital space, pushed students and teachers into online learning, and shifted global goals in everything from therapy to care and business.

Tools like Zoom and Microsoft Teams have become the de facto meeting standard as the world leverages connectivity and technology to stay in business, online and engaged. Over the past year, these tools and their use have evolved and multiplied. They have become more than just the sum of connectivity parts, giving people access to services and solutions they never had in the past. All individuals discovering their potential working from home, these new platforms are opening doors and creating opportunities, but they come with their fair share of complexities.

Change leads to opportunity

“Online was not something we really got involved with before Covid and we had to suddenly adopt these platforms and make significant adjustments. We have made some significant achievements, but there are challenges we continue to encounter and some ethical dilemmas.”

Online teaching and supervision has opened many doors, specifically when it comes to training, teaching and providing new skill sets to students that equips them to work in different contexts. It has improved the skills of students and faculty to approach teaching and learning from a global perspective and given them more access to continuing professional development conferences and events that previously might have been too expensive or out of reach.

Online teaching and training gave local students a global perspective on a virtual, accessible plate. It also allowed students to engage with people who were previously unable to access the classroom at some point, due to distance, time, and logistical constraints.

“Being able to offer face-to-face online has broadened the scope to broaden [the] practice as we can reach anyone, anywhere.” “We have a profession, but in other countries qualified professionals are few and far between. Now we can easily connect with colleagues around the world.”

“We can access greater numbers of students and faculty for remote interventions, potentially going beyond country borders to countries that have limited access to services. Two of our biggest challenges are accessing people in remote areas due to logistical challenges and shortages.

People with disabilities, who lack confidence in using technology, or who have limited data or poor connectivity are at an immediate disadvantage when it comes to online classes. Your experiences can be challenging, and these limitations impact what makes this class so valuable – connecting with people.

“Relationships are fundamental to our profession and with online it is not always possible to read people or address problems remotely”. “We have to engage with students to help them become more confident with technology before we even start thinking about offering a language intervention service.”

In addition to engaging with technology, there is a need to consider the environment as a whole. When students participate in face-to-face classes, tools and equipment are on-site, while in the online environment, they often need to be purchased by students. In addition, there is a risk that the class will become more involved with the parent or guardian than with the student if the student has cognitive impairment.

“Helping with materials and technology is one side of the coin, but we found that there is a risk of the country getting too involved in the class not getting the right environment, like in bed or on the couch, for example”. “If the line is bad or there is poor connectivity, or if there is excessive background noise – all of these factors negatively impact a class.”

There is much that still needs to be overcome to transform online into a tool as engaging and capable as face-to-face. Subtitling, country or parent involvement – ??all this is evolving in the online environment. However, students in complex situations and with challenging disabilities still struggle to receive the right levels. Certainly, online has opened the door, but to truly realize all the features of online classes and training, much more needs to be done to ensure that online shines as brightly as it does.
