The term “Bread and circuses” derived from the Roman era. It was used to describe how politicians maintained public approval through distraction.
Ancient Rome socially engineered its citizens with free food and entertainment. To keep the people satisfied and unquestioning of the government, emperors provided free bread and daily entertainment (circus) to maintain the compliance of the people. It kept them preoccupied so they’ll never revolt, does this sound familiar?
“The older dictators fell because they could never supply their subjects with enough bread, enough circuses, enough miracles, and mysteries” - Aldous Huxley
