The nineteenth-century German military theorist Carl von Clausewitz is famous for conceptualizing war as being the continuation of politics by other means. In the late Ottoman Empire, politics could also unfold along lines that did not necessarily come close to open military warfare, and yet could take on different guises.

After the regular housecleaning, Michael and Armen dive into a historical discussion about the appearance of popular Armenian revolutionary committees in the late nineteenth century. Armen discusses the two most well-known of these organizations, the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF; or Dashnaktsutyun) and the Social-Democratic Hnchakian Party (SDHP; or Hnchaks), which emerged in the 1880s, during a time of intense political ferment in the Ottoman Empire. These organizations were intent on forcing Sultan Abdülhamid II (r. 1876-1909) to implement a set of important land and civic reforms in the provinces of eastern Anatolia that would contribute to the betterment of the general living conditions of Armenians. The obstinate autocrat could not, however, be so easily moved by petitions and protests, which is why this period witnessed these organizations bringing the fight directly to the sultan's doorstep through a series of coordinated propaganda campaigns, bombings, and shoot-outs with regime forces.

These committees demonstrated a wide degree of cooperation with other revolutionary organizations at the time and their popularity by the time the First World War ended in 1918 was such that even Soghomon Tehlirian counted himself among their ranks. Some of the gendered aspects of the Armenian revolutionary movement are also explored in this episode.

Moving into the second segment of the talk, Michael talks about "Patriots Day" - and why he thinks this 2016 depiction of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings is both a good and not so good film. Armen also makes an important announcement regarding the content of future episodes.
