River Scenes Along the Royal Gorge Route Railroad

Our August 2021 trip to visit family in Colorado included visits to several of Colorado's scenic railroads, to include the Royal Gorge Route Railroad. I've long had a fascination with the Rio Grande and their Tennessee Pass route, so this one was definitely on my list to visit. Unfortunately due to trackwork at the time the train did not go to the end at Parkdale, where Rock & Rail serves a gravel pit.

A highlight of the gorge route is the 1879 hanging bridge located along the north side where the gorge narrows to 30 feet and the sheer rocks walls plunge into the river. The bridge consists of a 175-foot plate girder suspended on one side under A-frame girders that span the river and are anchored to the rock walls.

The rest of the Tennessee Pass Route, out of service since 1997, has recently sparked some talk of being reactivated as UP works with a partner to begin running trains over the entire length of the line once again.
