Addiction Memoirs: How to be a sympathetic person

Memoir writers in general fear coming off as unlikeable or unsympathetic as they tell their stories. This fear is especially present in those writing a story of overcoming addiction, trauma-based bad behavior, or simply a bad time in their lives when they weren't good to themselves or those around them.
