Jeremiah is the second of the 17 books of the Prophets, and Jeremiah was a prophet during the fall of Assyria and rise of Babylon, which took place around 600 B.C. He was sent as a prophet to the last surviving tribe of Israel, Judah, in a time of political and spiritual decay.

He was born during an age of blessing and restoration as King Josiah reinstituted God’s law in the land and freed them from the oppression of Assyria. After the death of King Josiah, the last righteous king, later Kings did sin and turned away from God. God revealed Jeremiah his dislike of the worship of Baal, Ishtar and other idols. Jeremiah described the one God of Jacob as the Maker or Creator whose name is The Lord Almighty.

Jeremiah compares Judah to a prostitute chapter 2:20, 3:1-3. Jeremiah came to warn God’s people of the danger of placing trust in anything other than Him and simultaneously to comfort them that God will not abandon them no matter how far they have strayed. He warns His people of the mighty force of Babylon that would come and destroy their city of Jerusalem. He asks the Israelite's to submit to the Babylonian authority as the implementation of God’s judgment. They do not take care of his warnings and are carried away to Babylon. However, he also prophesies that the captives will return after seventy years to rebuild Jerusalem and the Temple.
