Sunday Longplay - Metroid Fusion (GBA) - JP Version, English Translation Patch, Hard Mode

This week on Sunday Longplay, we begin the month-long Road To Metroid Dread with a whole month dedicated to Metroid games! Since I've already played the original NES Metroid, the fan remake of Metroid 2, and Super Metroid in a few different forms on this channel, I thought I'd start this journey with the next main entry in the series. Welcome to Metroid Fusion on the Game Boy Advance!

I'm doing something a little different with this playthrough. Because the Japanese release of the game had a Hard Mode difficulty option that wasn't available in the US version, I thought I'd play the Japanese version with an English translation patch just for the sake of playing on Hard Mode. In Hard Mode, enemies deal more damage and the item pickups are half as effective (Energy Tanks only add 50 life instead of 100, Missile packs only give you 2 missiles instead of 5).

However, this patch created an issue with the item percentage calculation for Hard Mode. I loaded up the map near the end of the run, and there you can clearly see where it shows how many energy tanks, missile packs, and Power Bomb packs you've collected that I got all of them, which should be 100%, right? Well, I guess the patch messed it up and based it on the maximum numbers for Normal Mode. For example, on Normal Mode the maximum amount of missiles you can have is 250, whereas because missile packs are only worth 2 missiles on Hard Mode, the maximum amount for Hard Mode is 106. So I guess the end percentage was calculated based on that, so 106/250 = ~43%. Don't be fooled. The numbers on the map screen clearly show 100%.

This game drew criticism for being more linear than its predecessors, but it is by no means a bad game because of it. It is still a welcome addition to the franchise, and it's hard to believe we're finally getting a follow-up to this game 19 years later! And no, we don't talk about Other M.
