Your Neighborhood with Kimo Quance (Episode 18: University Heights)

If you have been following along on our unique journey through the ins and outs of local history throughout San Diego, last week we left off on Adams Avenue, the mainstreet of the small and mighty Kensington. Like this area, there are tons of neighboring areas just as original and diverse as the other in almost every direction. Further down the intersection of Adams Avenue and Park Boulevard is the neighborhood of University Heights.
And did you know that the area was constructed back in 1888 and originally named University Heights because it had plans to house a branch of the University of Southern California? The plans fell through, and like a Phoenix from the ashes rose the idea and plans to create San Diego State University, originally named San Diego Normal School in its founding year of 1897, GO TECS!

Just like the rest of the community the entrance to the area is introduced with a one of a kind welcoming sign. Did you know that in the mid 90’s University Heights held a contest for local artists to design it themselves with a winner to be decided and awarded to construct the plans for the design of the sign. Local artist Kevin Whaley’s design was named victor, and debuted in 1997, although a replica today it is a sign that you will still see when you head down Park Boulevard today.
With the location of University Heights, the neighborhood has a greater spectrum of housing that includes:
Cottages
Apartments
Condos
To some of the most extravagant million dollar homes.
Its central location to the city of San Diego also gives it a quick drive to almost any amenity. Likewise, University Heights neighbors local, smaller communities like itself, so a bike ride or walk to grab some hot coffee, or dinner on the go is just a block or so away.
Like the neighboring communities, John D. Spreckles built a connecting line of street cars in 1915 as the main form of public transportation. Now we can see why the streets of Park Boulevard and Adams Avenue were so prominent at the time, because it was literally home to foot, trolley, and regular traffic.
Like a century ago University Heights keeps up with the high traffic with its array of eateries, small and quirky shops, and home to many other businesses. More notably, the area of University Heights is best known for its nightlife. Here you can head out to the many bars and clubs, especially this time of year to celebrate the start of the New Year with cheers from family and friends. Enjoy the food, drinks, and local and live talent that come out to play and perform as well!

In conclusion, the collection of the central San Diego small towns is what makes the city so much better. More places to go, eat, and enjoy for anyone and everyone.
