III. The Divinely Ordained Exchange
A. The cross is central to all God’s provision—Isaiah 53:6 the center of the center
B. The final 27 chapters of Isaiah—three main sections of 9 chapters each:
1. Chapters 40 through 48
2. Chapters 49 through 57
3. Chapters 58 through 66
4. All end with God’s judgment on the wicked
C. Center chapter is 53—add 52:13–15—makes 5 sets of three verses:
1. 52:13–15
2. 53:1–3
3. 53:4–6—middle set
4. 53:7–9
5. 53:10–12
D. Isaiah 53:4–6—the middle of the middle
1. Surely He (emphasized)
2. Root problem of all humanity—all have turned to their own way—iniquity,
rebellion
3. On Jesus was laid the iniquity (rebellion) of us all (Heb. avon)
All the evil consequences of rebellion as well
a. Punishment (Gen. 4:13)
b. Punishment (1 Sam. 28:10)
c. Punishment, evil consequences (Lam. 4:6, 22)
4. An exchange took place at the cross
a. All the evil came upon Jesus that all the good might come upon us
b. God’s grace

E. Two titles of Jesus (1 Cor. 15:45, 47)
1. The last Adam—the total evil inheritance came upon Him
2. The second man—by resurrection became Head of the new “Immanuel race”
F. Rebellion and its consequences (Is. 1:5–6)—fulfilled in Jesus on the cross (Is.
52:13–14 [compare NIV])

IV. Aspects Of The Exchange (Is. 53:4–5)
A. Punished vs. forgiven
1. Result: Peace with God (Rom. 5:1; Col. 1:19–21)
2. Thus provided redemption (being bought back) (Eph. 1:7 [Rom. 7])
B. Wounded vs. healed
1. Infirmities and sicknesses—all were healed (Matt. 8:16–17)
2. We were healed (1 Pet. 2:24)
3. Healing is a part of salvation
a. “Made well” = saved (Matt. 9:21–22)
b. “Made well” = saved (Mark 6:56)
c. “Healed” = saved (Luke 8:35–36)
d. Brought back from the dead = saved (Luke 8:47–50)
e. “Made well” = saved (Acts 4:8–10)
f. “Preserve me” = save (2 Tim. 4:18)
4. We must not neglect so great a salvation (Heb. 2:3)
