The Empire of the "Four Directions of the World", as the Incas themselves called themselves, occupied most of the South American continent - the territory of modern Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Colombia and Ecuador. From the capital, the city of Cusco, there were 4 roads. They led to other major cities of the empire, and smaller roads already diverged from them. The Incas built a network of roads 30 thousand km long - a lot even for modern times.

Judging by the mixture and layering of myths and beliefs of the Incas that the Spanish conquerors found, it is clear that the empire flourished long before the appearance of the Spaniards. The Incas built roads, cities and fortresses, systems of irrigation canals, multi-tiered terraced fields, even changed the course of rivers, created a society with a complex social organization. The arrival of the Spaniards marked the end of the empire. And it's not just about the war. Measles and smallpox brought by Europeans mowed down the inhabitants of both Americas. And with the disappearance of the empire, the culture of the Incas also left. Only ruins remain. And there is still an ancient road - the Inca Trail. More precisely, 43 km of the ancient road, now included in the TOP 10 best hiking trails in the world.

It seems surprising, but in the progressive Inca empire they did not know the wheels, they did not ride carts. All cargo was transported on pack animals. But if you look at the area in which the Incas lived, it is clear that the wagon will be useless there. On wheels, you can’t ride on permanent steps. Therefore, the Inca Trail is reserved for walkers and beasts of burden.

There are only 4 routes of passing the Trails of varying difficulty. The shortest is designed for 2 days, the most difficult for 7 and also includes the passage along the Salkantay glacier.
