Jack Packard and Doc Long of the A -1 Detective Agency had come to the aid of a young woman crying in her hotel room, Sunny Richards who intended to take her own life. She claimed that she had the Richards curse, which every other generation falls upon a female member of the family. Her great aunt who caused the death of her husband and her four children was responsible for the curse. And now it had befallen upon her so that her loved ones or anyone who tried to get near to her strangely meet some accidental death. Jack Packard, Doc Long and Reggie Yorke, often described as the soldiers of fortune are determined to show that the curse is nonsense.

This show stars legendary radio actress Mercedes McCambridge. Orson Welles called her "the world's greatest radio actress" for her work in the 1940's.

I Love a Mystery is an American radio drama series that aired 1939–44, about three friends who ran a detective agency and traveled the world in search of adventure.

The central characters, Jack Packard, Doc Long, and Reggie York, met as mercenary soldiers fighting the Japanese in China. Later, they met again in San Francisco, where they decided to form the A-1 Detective Agency. Their motto was "No job too tough, no adventure too baffling." The agency served as a plot device to involve the trio in a wide variety of stories.
