Sunday Longplay - Pilotwings (SNES)

This week on Sunday Longplay, I'm paying tribute to my dearly departed father on what would have been his 65th birthday. He died in 2017 from a brain aneurysm, and I'm honoring his memory today on his birthday by playing his favorite video game from when I was a kid. Welcome to Pilotwings on the SNES. This is for you, Dad!

Pilotwings was a launch title for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, released August 13, 1991 in North America, 8 months after its Japanese release on the Super Famicom. In this game, you join the Flight Club and undergo several training lessons with different flying apparatuses including the Light Plane, the Rocketbelt (i.e. jet pack), the Hang Glider, and Skydiving, with the goal of scoring high enough to get your pilot's license. In the Light Plane events, you must fly through a series of rings then land the plane on the runway. In Skydiving, you must maneuver through a series of rings in freefall, then open your parachute and land on one of the marked score targets. In the Rocketbelt events, you must take off and fly through a series of targets around the area before touching back down on the target area. The Hang Glider events have you using thermal currents to ascend to a target altitude or flying through a ring twice and then touching down on a separate target area from the Rocketbelt/Skydiving target. After completing the objective, you will be given a score for the lesson from your instructor based on speed, accuracy, and a few other factors. Score high enough across all tasks in the lesson, and your instructor will give you your pilot's license along with a password to pick up where you left off.

There are also bonus stages you can access by landing on a special moving target in the Skydiving and Rocketbelt lessons, or landing on the Rocketbelt target with the Hang Glider. These bonus stages are worth an automatic 100 points plus a bonus scored within the stage. In the Skydiving bonus stage, you maneuver a penguin as it dives into the pool. In the Rocketbelt bonus stage, you control a winged man bouncing across platforms and trampolines onto targets marked with the letter P and then ending by splashing into a target water area. The Hang Glider bonus stage is basically a button-mashing exercise where you flap your wings and fly as far as possible before you ultimately splash down. These can really help in later lessons with high score requirements to make up lost points.

Once you complete all four instructors' lessons, the game takes a darker turn as your instructors are captured and you are then tasked with piloting a helicopter to rescue them, dodging enemy anti-aircraft gun fire along the way. After landing on the helipad in the enemy base and rescuing your instructors, you are awarded the Pilot's Wings medal and then you unlock Pilotwings Expert, another set of lessons with much higher score requirements, stronger winds, and various environmental conditions. Once you complete all the expert lessons, the same enemy organization that captured your instructors then proceeds to kidnap Big Al's brother and it once again falls on you to lead the rescue effort through much more dangerous enemy territory. Rescuing him will award you the Flight Club's highest honor, the Golden Pilot's Wings, and rolls the credits.
