Tow Mater, beloved “Cars” character, lives in Galena, Kansas. At least the tow truck that inspired the Pixar animators does. Director John Lassiter and his creative team visited numerous locations along Route 66’s 2,226 miles when researching their 2006 movie, “Cars.” This included Baxter Springs and Galena, Kansas. In Galena they encountered a 1951 tow truck that inspired the design of lovable character Tow Mater. The town of Galena has created recreations of many “Cars” characters including “Doc” Hudson, Tow Mater, the Sheriff, Luigi, and the shy flower-watering fire engine. The video also contains footage of several vintage gas stations including a restored Kan-o-Tex station, Independent Oil and Gas station, and a Texaco. There will be several future videos including Route 66 locations coming soon after this one.
