Bivy Camping in a Winter Storm - I Made a BIG Mistake

Winter storm Izzy is headed towards the Carolinas and I am super excited to camp in the onset of the storm. I head to my old stomping grounds to bivy camp in the open field. The plan was to have a nice big fire through the night and sleep in my military gortex bivy and sleep system adding the Valtcan puffy blanket inside my sleeping bag as an extra layer.

I knew I'd need a lot of fire wood and began collecting it. I enjoye a beef stew MRE. The upside down campfire was my choice of fire lay and boy was that a big error in judgment. The ground was dry and having a fire on dry grass in a field was not a wise decision. BIG MISTAKE! Fire and dry grass do not go together at all. I should know better. How danger never processed in my mind, I'll never know.

It turned out to be a very dangerous situation and I did everything necessary to keep the fire from spreading. I used my Nalgene full of water and also my canteen full of water to put out the flaming grass but it had little to no effect. All I could do was remain as calm as I could,, stomp grass as it caught and tend to the falling coals. I was almost completely exhausted and dehydrated once the fire was small and no longer a huge risk.

This was a valuable and important lesson learned that was a big reality check. Fire safety is very important I clearly did not use my brain.
I admit my mistake and can only move forward. I was very lucky.
