How the Battle Over CRT Swung VA's Election for Youngkin

Loudoun County Virginia parents like Ian Prior and Tiffany Polifko attribute Virginia’s shift back to red in the 2021 gubernatorial race to parents and their concerns over what their children are being taught in the public schools. Critical race theory and gender identity ideology has been working its way into classrooms across Loudoun County, located about 45 miles northwest of D.C., over the past year or so.

As Loudoun County parents voiced their concerns over school curriculum and policies, Youngkin listened, Prior says, while “McAuliffe dismissed” parents.

While Yougkin’s victory proved a surprise for voters across the state, Prior said he think it shows “the power of parents unifying for their children is the political issue for the next three years.”
